One of the first questions that I ask any prospective new laser customer is what materials would you like to convert? And 7 out of 10 times I’ll get the same response - Plywood! Now don’t get me wrong I have no issues with plywood per say and as an inexpensive substrate to cut your laser teeth on it’s great. The problem is that those of us who have been in the industry for some time have had their fill of working with plywood and cringed many times over at the sight of yet another plywood product scorched to within an inch if it’s life on a $500 hobby laser!

A good quality laser in creative hands is an extremely powerful tool that can engrave and/or cut a myriad of soft and hard materials at speed and to a high degree of accuracy. These creative folk are using their lasers to make a plethora of unique high-end products which sell at a premium. From 3D art installations to jewellery , fashion and furniture the creativity of the laser community continues to amaze.

The laser is the tool but the bread and butter are the materials that you regularly feed it! The importance of material cannot be overstated. At its most benign, substandard materials may effect laser parts and result in a poor quality end piece. More serious issues are encountered in supplying product which is considered not fit for purpose or, materials that are hazardous to the laser operator.
